Missionary Backpacks

The Elders came to dinner and were impressed with the duct tape backpack that Ellie had created. They asked her to create some missionary backpacks for them. They loved them so much that they came back for three more for their missionary buddies. Ellie can create anything with cardboard from the recycle bin and colored duct tape!

My Student Art Show

For the last three years I have loved teaching art! This year we focused on learning about different influential artists and art styles and doing pieces inspired by them. After many extra hours of preparation, we held our annual art show at the local library. Here are some of my favorite pieces that we did this year.

I wanted to teach pointillism to my students this year. (Pictures made from tiny dots of color placed close together.) This mural (all done with dots of paint on the end of pencil erasers) was a team effort and a labor of love. It took well over 60 man hours to complete. I just love the way it turned out looking like a beautiful patchwork quilt. An experience the students will not soon forget!

Night at the Museum

This is Ellie pointing to her "Reflections" entry, "What Diversity Means to Me." She wrote about her paining: "I like to dance and my best friend likes to sing. Diversity is Fun." Her entry won for the first grade and went on to the district competition.

Janey and Ellie got to show off their art work at their school's "Night at the Museum." Janey's grade also gave a recital on their recorders. I have the chance to teach art lessons once a month in Ellie's class, and the penguin picture above is one of the projects I did with the first graders. The girls are both very creative and talented artists.

Ellie's Easel

Ellie's favorite Christmas present is her easel. She spends hours creating at it. She especially likes the chalk board. This is a drawing of a New Zealand cat's claw that she is very proud of.

Chalk Art Festival and Fireworks!

Last weekend we attended a chalk art festival as a family at the Gateway. This charity event brings out professional and amateur artists alike for a good cause. These are just a few of our favorites.

Saturday night the kids tried some chalk art of their own at Grandma's house. We gathered for their city's fireworks display and some yummy food. While we waited for it to get dark the kids got creative. I especially love Ellie's Rapunzel with hair flowing all the way down the sidewalk!

2011 Art Show

One of my favorite things to do is teach my art classes every week. This year I had 3 classes, with a total of 16 students. The first semester we focused on drawing principles and "seeing" like an artist. The second semester we delved into all sorts of art medium: acrylic, pastels, water color, colored pencils and oil pastels. We also did a fun field trip the the Utah Museum of Fine Art and we passed off the Art Merit Badge for the boys in the class.

Saturday I held an Art Show at the local library for all my students and their family and friends. It took hours to mat everything and get it hung, but it turned out beautiful! It was so satisfying for the students to show off their hard work. I can't wait for next year!

Blue Jay by Whitney

I got a nice set of water colors for the art classes I teach, and Whitney had fun experimenting with them. Very lovely.

BYU MOA

Monday was a holiday, so we took the kids to see the Carl Bloch exhibit at the BYU Museum of art. They had many of his alter pieces from Europe and many of his etchings as well as some non-religious pieces. It was wonderful to see such masterful, original pieces, up close and in person. A trip to the creamery for ice cream after the museum topped it off just right!

Art Show

An artist at heart, I wanted to teach my children drawing lessons this year. As I started designing the lessons, I decided that they would be so much better if we invited some other students to join us. And so, I started teaching art lessons in October. What a joy in my life! I love the amazing students I get to work with and I do the exercises right along with them, thus adding the art that has been missing for too many years from my life. This semester I've had 2 classes, with 5 students each - including 3 of my own children.

This week ended our first semester, and we celebrated everything the students learned with a formal art show Friday night. They all have progressed so much and I'm proud of their hard work and love to see their natural talent. Next semester - portraits!

3-D History

Last week while studying the Byzantine Empire we made our own mosaics. I love how Janey's flower turned out. I know it looks like M&Ms on a cake, but it's really glass pebbles in plaster!

This week while covering the Arabian Dessert we made our own edible oasis. Here's Daniel's before he gobbled it up.

Star Wars Recycled

Daniel saved up his allowance to by a Star Wars action figure. Once he got home he realized that his commander was going to need a base and a ship. He build a base out of Legos, a hanger out of his Lego boxes and a fleet of ships after raiding our recycling drawer. I love his resourceful and creative spirit. Here a just a couple examples.

Mini cruisers out of muffin boxes.

His destroyer name Goliath.

Mom and Me by Daniel age 9

Steve has been gone all week camping with his Dad and brother-in-law, taking the camera with him. I was promised a blog article and photos for my role in holding down the fort. As I anxiously await the safe return of my husband (and my camera) I will share with you instead this sweet picture Daniel just presented me with. He seems to be most creative when he should be sleeping! The hand on my shoulder melted my heart. I wasn't sure where the glasses came from, since I don't own any, but he explained he hadn't learned to draw girl's eyes yet, so he used glasses instead. It's either that or he thinks I need glasses. Hmmm . . . . .

Crazy Robot by Ellie age 4

Dad was out of town all last week. When Ellie brought me this picture for the blog I was afraid she was going to say it was a picture of me. Thankfully she told me it was a crazy robot instead.

Robot by Ellie age 4

Ellie handed me this picture and said, "Here mommy, put this on your blog." It's been a full week of cookie deliveries, mock trial practices and finishing merit badges. So, I am grateful for Ellie's generous offer, as it is the sole offering to our newsletter from a busy week. Tune in next week to see the fruits of our labours.

Anatomy by Janey

I consider the creative projects and artwork my kids come up with, on their own, my salary for this full time mothering job of mine. I have found them to be especially inspired at bedtime and my requests for lights out are often met with begging for just a few more minutes to complete some project or other. Janey came up with this 4 page masterpiece while we were on a date the other night.

Create by Noreen

At the start of the new school year I found myself searching for the next thing to stretch myself and inspire my children. Steve suggested taking up painting (which he knows I have always wanted to do), but I dismissed it saying I needed something more academic right now. Then I attended the Women’s Session of General Conference at the end of September and President Uchtdorf spoke right to me. In his talk he said, "The desire to create is one of the deepest yearnings of the human soul. No matter our talents, education, backgrounds, or abilities, we each have an inherent wish to create something that did not exist before. Everyone can create. You don’t need money, position, or influence in order to create something of substance or beauty. Creation brings deep satisfaction and fulfillment. We develop ourselves and others when we take unorganized matter into our hands and mold it into something of beauty. . . "

And so, my ever wise husband knew what I needed all along. By the first week of November I was enrolled in an oil painting class one night a week and it has been a joy to create. In a high school art class I did a black and white oil painting, but this is my first ever color oil. I hope to improve a lot over time, but it has been satisfying to finally start on this life long dream.

Giving Thanks

We hope everyone (in the US anyway) enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday surrounded by family, great food, and hearts full of gratitude. I know we did!
